David Collins is the eye behind the camera of our dogstar and Laika spring 2010 photo-shoot. Here we uncover a bit more about this talented photographer and his dynamic style.

How did you get started in photography?
Photography has always been a passion, but I started working professionally in 2002. My first break was shooting a cover for Style Magazine. It was a fashion shoot down the Gold Coast at the Q1 building. With a lot of preparation and a bit of luck the final outcome worked very well and spawned several other opportunities.
What do you enjoy shooting the most?
As a commercial photographer I get to work with a lot of people on a variety of projects, but I always look forward to the fashion shoots the most. Fashion gives me the chance to collaborate with some wonderful artists and freedom to explore my own style.
What are the key factors that make your photographs special?
Through the years I have developed my own style, hopefully an identifiable look that viewers will recognize. My process involves prioritising colour and shapes. In the early days I found myself attracted to the drama of high contract, low key images. Now as I get older I have found that you can pull more nuances from clever lighting and perfect timing.
What kind of projects are the ones you look forward to?
Occasionally I get a brief for a concept that needs something special. Doing new things, incorporating or developing new techniques really excites me. I look forward to anything that gives me a sense of moving forward.
What gives you the most satisfaction as a photographer?
Seeing a smile on my clients face when I hand them the proof sheets.

Tiffany Beckwith-skinner is the talented makeup artist for this year dogstar and laika spring collection; in this interview she reveals a bit more about how she expresses herself through her art.

What inspired you to create this look?
What inspired the Makeup for the dogstar shoot that was chosen for Lauren was the initial conversation with Masayo.
When chatting to the designer or director I find I am often filled with images or ideas in my mind’s eye, so I always attempt to have paper and pencil to write or draw the images our conversations bring to mind.
The conversation with Masayo was lovely, disjointed and illuminating. Full of the two of us describing images, offering words, expressing emotions… such as this or that …do you think… when you say that I see…
Then I sent a photo of what had been sketched and I fortunately had caught what she had thought.
It was funny, that in the end all was much as the sketch.
How does your process begin, when you are creating a look?
My process starts with conception of the overall idea and will fluctuate until the model is from under and in the photographers gaze. It begins with a conversation, a sketch. I start to play with colours on my hand, face… first, foundation.
With thed shoot it hinged first on the foundation, like parchment, vellum, deep beige to yellow, string, canvas to write on. Then finding the appropriate inks to use for the writing. I wrote on myself a lot in the mirror, trying to find the right style of script. The lashes too needed to look more like the writing land. The lips not typically shiny, to avoid distract from the luminosity of her eyes.
Power is always a huge consideration for hair.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I am an artist that calls to her trowel: makeup, body painting, hair styling, jeweller, designer of cloth and props, acrylic paint, special effects, workshop coordinator, stylist also a nanny, work in fashion hospitality and whatever else takes my fancy.
Music and nature inspire and support me and I’ve really come to like football.
Will you be working with dogstar in the future?
I certainly hope so, the calibre of the team I was able to work with was very high. The photographer Dave Collins images were evocative and beautifully arranged. Lauren has the most expressive demeanour. Lily, so charming. Jaimie, the, most incredible timekeeper I ever come across. and all is about the designs and from them came all the inspiration for fun and creativity that we had over the two days of shooting.
We have been busy at the studio lately preparing for our spring collection 2010, collaborating with model Lauren Orrell, photographer David Collins from Black Box photography and make-up artist Tiffany Beckwith-Skinner. It was interesting finding the right location along with blending in the right elements to capture the right shot; mood, lighting, make up, accessories and garments.
