As one of Australia's premier online clothing boutiques, our mission is to build a legacy. A legacy that transcends fashion. We strive to design women's clothing that remains stylish for years to come, enabling our customers to lead the next fashion movement, both stylistically and sustainably. Based in Brisbane, Australia, Dogstar includes the labels Laika & Papershadow.
Usually a story begins at the start. But this is not quite the case when talking about dogstar.
A story it may be, but it begins long before any preconceived ideas of collections and exhibitions, runways or photoshoots.
In fact, Japanese born Masayo Yasuki never set out to own her own clothing label - it was more of an evolution of unforeseen circumstances.
Let's just say that ..
Recent QUT business graduate Masayo, armed with a sewing machine and the 1973 womens day learn how to sew hard back copy (both purchased at the local vinnies) teaches herself how to mend and sew so she can resize garments for an international order gone terribly wrong.
Left with excess stock, Masayo began selling at the various Brisbane markets, and once that stock sold she began to sew her own simple garments.
As her skills progressed, so too did the complexity and quality of the clothes.
Before long Masayo had a strong loyal following and was known for her unique style combining asymmetric cuts, multi wear collars, a love of Japanese fabrics
and incredibly comfy wide leg pants.
Many years later, at the perfect time, an opportunity to open a boutique presented itself, and it was then that dogstar was born - right underneath the Zoo nightclub in Fortitude Valley.
Since then dogstar has grown organically into a solid team with their studio now based in Woolloongabba - Brisbane.
Along with boutiques in Brisbane and Melbourne and stockists across Australia and NZ , dogstar is now gaining an international presence with it's online flagship store.
Still known for unique cuts and impeccable craftsmanship, a strong commitment to using natural fibres and the ability to make clothes fit beautifully, the focus of the company continues to rest on design and quality, sustainability and possibly most importantly (thanks to Masayo's Japanese ness) customer service.
dogstar continues to evolve (but now the circumstances have become opportunities) and is excited about what the future holds, seeking out artists, sculptures, stylists and creatives to collaborate with.
''I like to believe that the dogstar customer is someone who
will add their own character and personality to our designs and vice versa.''
"dogstar does not conform to stereotypical perceptions of beauty.
A perfect blend of tailored cuts and an unconventional elegance.
Beauty is within the person and design, combined.
We create the garment, and they the customers create the look.
I never fail to be surprised at the ways in which women create completely
different looks from a single one of our designs depending on how they wear it.
We are all individuals and confident ones nonetheless."
